The E17 desktop shell
Enlightenment DR17 is a very configurable window manager - or better, desktop shell - which scales smoothly from embedded devices to high-end systems. It is based on a solid set of libraries called the Enlightenment Foundation Libraries (EFL).
Key features include animated backgrounds, flexible themeing, integrated file browser, modular system for plugging in additional features, configuration through GUI or shell commands and many more.
As the EFL provides widget sets there are several applications besides the window manager which share the same unique features. There's a wide variety including image/PDF/DVI viewers, a presentation and slideshow creator, a file manager based on a virtual file system, music players and a CD ripper and encoder. Besides programming in C, developers can use perl-bindings and Glade UI descriptions as well.
Trying to make it run on different architechtures I've created a Debian repository for alpha, then for i386 and finally for AMD64/EMT64, as well as a pdaXrom feed for the Sharp Zaurus PDA.
- If you're running Debian on one of the above mentioned architectures refer to this section.
- Zaurus users can find a feed and installtion packages here along with instruction, icons and some pre-compiled wallpapers.
For more information about features, configuring the look and the behaviour consider reading the FAQs and/or browsing the themes and screenshot sections on get-e.org.
Notes:
DR17 is - as the DR prefix suggests - a development realease and thus not ment to be reliable yet. Nevertheless it's under heavy development and many users are already using it as their main desktop manager since about end of 2005.
I'm using an EV56 based Workstation (PWS 600au) but it should be running on EV6 or EV7, too. If anyone had success with another model, I'd be glad to be informed.
I don't take responsibility if things start falling apart once E17 is installed on your system. This doesn't imply however that I wouldn't be glad to be informed about it.
