SHARP Zaurus C-860/C-1000

zaurus

I've finally got my hands on a Zaurus C-860 'Boxer'. It turned out to be much more than just a gadget with VGA resolution. After spending some weeks using the Cacko ROM and trying OZ Opie and GPE as well pdaXrom I noticed that I should really settle down on one.

Each distribution has its advantages. The Cacko ROM is quite stable and has lots of applications ported, despite its Qtopia engine. OpenZaurus/Opie is also Qtopia based but not as mature - at least that's what it seemed to me. OpenZaurus/GPE looks really interesting, though. It's X-based which opens up a totally new dimension. Applications and menus have a customizable GTK-look, windows are managed by a 'real' window manager and can be moved around, minimized and - well - managed. But still it isn't what I'm looking for, even after installing E17: The current version (3.5.4.1) can't run mplayer in fullscreen at a reasonable speed because its X server doesn't support changing the resolution via xrandr. The GPE PIM suite isn't very stable and not as feature rich as KDE Pim/PI (the latter isn't in the oz feed either).

I ended up using pdaXrom which is far from usable without some tuning but almost all glitches are fixable (see here). Last but not least pdaXrom's X server is much faster and can run Quake 1 flawlessly.

Update: I traded in my good old C1VE Picturebook for the C1000 of my best friend. The more Zauri the merrier.
